He began composing it in the spring of 1854, shortly after the attempted suicide of his friend and mentor Robert Schumann. Finally, on 22 January 1859, the Piano Concerto No. 1 in in D Minor, Op. 15, had its premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in Hanover under the direction of Joseph Joachim.
