But let this be a lesson about something bigger, which is that understanding music - how it works and how you can use these tools to express yourself - is a separate and more important thing than knowing all the technical terms. I never thought about the term "root position" after I stopped taking piano lessons as a teenager, but I've known and used root position chords constantly since then. The terminology is only occasionally important when you need to communicate about something specific.
